The maize calendar: plant with the rains — and soil that holds them
Timing wins you the season; compost-rich soil helps you keep it. How to read the rains, match your variety to your region, and topdress for maximum yield in Zimbabwe.
Across most of Zimbabwe, the single biggest factor in your maize yield isn’t the variety or even the fertiliser — it’s whether you planted into the right moisture window, on soil that can hold what falls. Plant too early on a false start and your crop wilts; plant late and you run out of season. Here’s how to get it right.

Three levers decide most of your yield
- Planting into a true effective rain — not the first showers.
- Matching your variety to your Natural Region.
- Building soil organic matter so each rain soaks in and stays.
This guide walks through all three — and shows where PCAT BLOCK C fits your timing.
Wait for an effective rain
Every season, the first scattered showers tempt farmers to rush. Don’t. The Meteorological Services Department repeatedly warns growers not to plant on early showers that so often end in a dry spell (The Herald). Think of the neighbour whose crop germinated on the first rains and wilted two weeks later — those were false rains, not an effective one.
Plant only after an effective rain:
- At least 20 mm of rain over about three days, with no dry spell expected for the next 10 days.
- Maize needs roughly 22 mm of moisture in the soil to germinate evenly.
Field test: squeeze a ball of soil from 10 cm down — if it holds together, you’re close. Use the first light showers to finish land preparation, not to plant.

Know your region’s window
Zimbabwe’s five Natural Regions are defined by rainfall, and yours sets your window (FAO):
- Region I (>1,000 mm): high, reliable rain — plant early into a true rain.
- Region II (750–1,000 mm): the prime maize belt — target full-season hybrids if you can plant early.
- Region III (650–800 mm): marginal — manage moisture hard; favour medium-season varieties.
- Region IV (450–650 mm): drought-prone — stick to short-season or drought-tolerant maize; don’t wait past your first true rain.
- Region V (<450 mm): erratic — maize is high-risk without irrigation.
Always check the MSD’s seasonal forecast for the current year before you commit seed.
Build soil that holds the rain
Timing only pays if your soil can keep the water it’s given. Compost-rich soil holds moisture longer through the dry spells that punctuate our season. For most sandy smallholder fields, plan to work PCAT BLOCK C in at least a month before your expected planting date, so it can start improving structure before the first true rain. Topdress at knee height
Nitrogen timing is where many growers leave yield in the field (maize agronomy):
- First topdressing: ~3–4 weeks after emergence, when the plant is roughly knee-high.
- Second: 6–8 weeks after emergence, before tasseling.
- Always apply into moist soil — never onto a stressed crop, or you waste the nitrogen.
Fields with good organic matter from PCAT BLOCK C hold moisture longer, which makes each topdressing work harder and lowers the risk of scorching a stressed crop.
Scout for fall armyworm from emergence
Scout at least twice a week from emergence, walking the field and checking each plant’s funnel for damage and larvae (FAO). Early detection is the difference between a spot-treatment and a lost field — see beating fall armyworm the organic way.
